For the third time, the AOE Tech Radar provides an overview of technologies for the development of software solutions. We have new assessments and recommendations especially in the areas of security, operations and frameworks.

Technologies and methods form the basis for efficient and successful development work. At AOE, we always keep an eye on innovation – and regularly question established technologies and methods. We regularly collect and share our findings from this process: the AOE Tech Radar provides an overview of technologies for the development of software solutions and contains assessments and recommendations resulting from our practical work.

AOE Tech Radar Version #3: What's new?

General

23 technologies are new in Tech Radar (N as in New).
20 technologies changed their positions due to our reassessment (C as in Changed).
For a better overview of all Operations- and DevOps-related technologies, we have changed the cluster “Platform and Services” to “Platforms and Operations”.

Methods & Patterns

Here, the aspect of safety is the primary focus.
Following the “zero trust” approach of Beyond Corp Framworks, we have established an enterprise-wide SSO-System – an approach that we generally recommend.
At AOE, we are currently testing STRIDE Threat Modeling: In team sessions we use the Elevation of Privilege Card Game to analyze threats and make them more tangible.

Platforms & Operations

For a better overview of the applications and systems involved in microservice-oriented software projects, Distributed Tracing has proven itself for us.
Currently, we use Jaeger as a tool for this purpose and therefore have added it to the Tech Radar.

Languages & Frameworks

We have been using Flamingo und Flamingo Commerce successfully for more than two years – especially for E-Commerce. Other teams und developers have been adopting the scalable frontend framework.
The last few months have shown that the React.js library continues to be a good fit for our frontend applications; therefore, we now classify it as “Adopt”.
To improve page load times and thus SEO, we use Next.js for server-side rendering of the React.js applications.
For communication of a JS-based frontend with “backend for frontend”, GraphQL with the Apollo Client haved proven valuable.
